HELP UKRAINIAN CHILDREN

to get access to critical medical care in Europe
Since the Russian invasion, hundreds of Ukrainian children suffered from life-threatening and serious injuries. Our mission is to provide vital surgical care and rehabilitation support to these vulnerable children and help them recover.

Our mission & vision

“Aurum Charity Foundation” vzw is a Brussels registered nonprofit organization dedicated to provide  surgical and rehabilitation care to wounded children affected by the conflict, between 0 and 15 years old. We work closely with local hospitals and doctors to identify children in need of specialized medical attention, and our team of professionals helps facilitate and finance their treatment.

Since 2017, Alona Lebedieva Charity fund “Aurum” has been funding vital treatments for babies with disabilities and supplying new medical devices to Ukrainian hospitals. In total, we have helped more than 15 kids and donated over 2 million UAH  in medical aid.

01Our Mission

To provide life-changing medical treatment and rehabilitation services to the most vulnerable children, with the ultimate goal of improving their quality of life and helping them to recover and lead fulfilling lives.

02Our Vision

To create a world where all children have access to the medical care and support they need to recover and thrive. We believe that every child has the right to a healthy and happy life, and we are committed to working tirelessly to make this vision a reality. Through our efforts, we hope to provide hope and healing to the most vulnerable children in Ukraine.

03Our Goals

  • In our first year, we aim to provide full medical care in Europe to 30 children with severe injuries.
  • Provide high-standard rehabilitation services and mental support to 50 children a year.

History of our charity fund in Ukraine

Alona Lebedieva charity fund “Aurum” was established as nonprofit organization in Ukraine in 2017.

The primary mission of the fund was to provide urgent medical care to newborn children who needed operations in the first weeks of life, or to families who could not cover the costs of the medical care. Alona Lebedieva promptly provided the required funds, to increase the chances of a fully-fledged life for every child. Since then, we helped 15 babies by financing over a million UAH in medical care.

2017-2019

During this time, the fund focused on helping Ukrainian hospitals to fund the renovations of their facilities and advanced medical supplies. We helped to refurbish rehabilitation rooms in three children's hospitals and donated over a million UAH.

2019-2022

Since the beginning of the full-scale war, the charity fund has shifted its focus to supporting Ukrainian children affected by the war.

2022 - Present

Children & selected charities we have helped

From the very beginning, our fund had two missions: to enable high-standard medical care in Ukrainian hospitals, and to provide life-saving medical care to newborn children, supporting individual parents and the “Mother & Baby” NGO.

Alinka, a few months old

The “Mother and Baby” organization referred to us a baby girl, Alinka, who needed urgent neurosurgical operation as her conditions suddenly deteriorated.

Our fund acted immediately and provided all necessary support. Alinka has now recovered and is growing up happily in her family.

Matviyko, newborn

Matviyko was born prematurely, as a result of which a brain haemorrhage occurred. He was in critical condition.

We have reacted promptly to the request, and he was treated successfully. Matviyko was later discharged from the hospital, and now he is growing and developing like any healthy child.

Kyiv City Children’s Hospital

As part of our operations, our foundation renovated several wards in the Kyiv City Children’s Clinical Hospital shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic.

We also provided support for the repair and modernization of facilities and equipment in three other children’s medical institutions in Kyiv.

First year’s targets

This is an estimate of funds required per child, ranging from rehabilitation and mental support to complex operations and prosthetic appliances. The final cost may vary depending on their specific needs and circumstances, as well as the arrangements made with medical partners.

30 children treated for severe wounds/year 0
50 children receiving rehabilitation/year 0
80 treated & recovered children/year 0
€2k-€40k range of required funds/child 0

Our foundation’s process

These processes are critical to ensure we are able to efficiently and effectively carry out our work and make a positive impact in the lives of the children we serve.

+Identifying children in need

Our team of professionals, partners and volunteers in Ukraine and Europe will collaborate with partners and healthcare providers in both Kyiv and regions near the combat areas to identify children who require non-urgent but still essential medical treatment and rehabilitation support.

Our potential partners  in Ukraine are top hospitals, including Ohmadit, Medikom, and Dobrobut.

+Referral & Intake

Once a child has been identified, we conduct a referral and intake process to gather information about the child’s medical history and current condition, what type of help they need, as well as his/her location.

This process helps our team to ensure that we are providing appropriate and effective treatment.

+Medical treatment & Rehabilitation

After the intake process, we analyze every case with a team of medical professionals in Ukraine and Europe, particularly Hungary, to develop a personalized treatment and rehabilitation plan that addresses child’s specific needs.

Our team works closely with the child and their family during and after the treatment, to ensure that they continue to receive the care and resources they need to recover.

+Fundraising & Management

Finally, our organization relies on fundraising and donor management processes to sustain our operations and to provide vital medical help to wounded children in Ukraine.

We aim to work closely with international NGOs, institutional investors, and private donors to raise funds and ensure that our organization continues to make a positive impact in the lives of these children.

Children – victims of war

With the escalation of violence in Ukraine, children are deeply traumatized, continue to be killed and injured. They are terrified, in shock, and desperate for safety, protection and psychosocial care.

As the war in Ukraine continues, with critical services decimated and infrastructure destroyed, humanitarian needs intensify across the country. Since February 2022, millions of children were forced to flee, leave their homes, separate from families or put at risk of violence, while 1,395 children were killed or wounded.

According to UNICEF, around 2.8 million children in Ukraine will require health assistance in 2023, while the Ukrainian health system is reaching a critical point with about 550 health facilities impacted by attacks. In areas affected by intense fighting, children and families are even more vulnerable to high risks of violence, unexploded ordinances and disrupted schooling.

Helping children wounded for life

The number of wounded children in Ukraine is increasing day by day as explosive attacks continue to occur in populated urban areas.

Although Ukraine has received over 16.7 billion in humanitarian aid, there are still hundreds of children in critical need of treatment. They have been traumatized by the devastating violence around them and have suffered life-changing injuries.

Governmental organisations & large NGOs

The EU Commission and European governments are providing specialized healthcare in hospitals across Europe to support the treatment of injured Ukrainians. For example, the Civil Protection Mechanism helped to transfer 1,000 Ukrainians to 18 European countries. Poland has also increased its initiatives to provide life-saving treatments to severely ill patients, while UNICEF and the Red Cross continue to operate inside the country.

Local hospitals

Hospitals across Ukraine provide critical operations to injured children, including central clinics, such as ``Okhmatdit`` in Kyiv, and regional children's clinical hospitals, located near the combat zones (Kharkiv, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia) or in the rear (Lviv). However, it is challenging to cover the surging number of patients or particularly severe cases. The security factor deteriorates the situation, as hospitals are often targeted by missiles.

Local NGOs

Most of the existing Ukrainian NGOs helping children during the war focus on vulnerable kids with disabilities, providing essential and mental aid. But none are providing private health services to wounded children. Local volunteer organizations fundraise to support hospitals and wounded children, but they need more resources to cope with all cases.

We are working with local partners to identify children in need.

Children that need help now:

Svitlana S.,6 years old

Suffered a shrapnel wound and was operated on in Kharkiv. She is currently in the regional children’s hospital with one fragment remaining in her hip joint. Doctors in Kharkiv do not advise removing it to avoid risking the joint’s functionality. She is trying to walk under the supervision of doctors.

Sofia P.,11 years old

Suffered multiple shrapnel wounds to the face and neck. She was operated on in Kharkiv and is currently undergoing treatment. She is also doing online sessions with a psychologist to help with deep wounds.

Yulia M.,14 years old

Was injured in the arm by a cluster bomb. She was operated on at the 4th Kharkiv emergency hospital. A nerve in her arm was affected, and she is currently undergoing treatment. According to doctors’ predictions, the nerve is alive, and it will take 2-3 weeks for examination and recovery. She is in the hospital and needs further physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
